Letter from the Principal

Central Southland College is a vibrant and supportive school community. We work hard to provide opportunities and experiences for our students and believe in offering a foundation which effectively prepares every young person for life after secondary school in the 21st Century.

Nestled in Winton, with the backdrop of rural Southland, Central Southland College is perfectly placed to draw on all that New Zealand has to offer. We value and utilise a wide range of links with our local community while also embracing technology to ensure we stay connected and involved in wider New Zealand life.

We are extremely proud of our record of academic, sporting and cultural successes with a focus on setting clear goals to ensure that every student strives for, and reaches, their own potential. In conjunction with this, numerous student-led initiatives are encouraged and supported throughout the school to ensure that our young people are well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to life within, and beyond, the College.

About Central Southland College

About the school

Central Southland College opened in 1965, and is situated in a quiet corner of the town. We are co-educational and offer courses from Year 9 (age about 13) to Year 13 (age about 18). Our roll is approximately 580. CSC is rated as Decile 7 by the Ministry of Education, for funding purposes. Our teaching facilities are up-to-date, and include a superb Technology suite, Library, Gym, swimming pool, laboratories, hall, drama suite, and much more. Playing fields and grounds are spacious and pleasant.

Our School Community

We are the local secondary school for the large area of Central Southland, including the small towns and districts of Winton, Centre Bush, Drummond, Lochiel, Nightcaps, and Hedgehope, together with a huge area of farmland. Most of our students travel to school by free school bus. We enjoy a high level of community confidence, and positive relationships with parents, community sports coaches, local businesses, and contributing primary schools. Our school community is approximately 12% Maori. After hours, our school is used by lots of community groups such as basketball competitions, the swimming club, sewing classes, and so on.

Location

We are in Winton, a lovely small town (population 2000) 30 minute's drive north of the southern city of Invercargill (pop 50,000), in the province of Southland, New Zealand.

That makes us only 1.5 hour's drive from Queenstown, the same to Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri, and just a hop and a skip to Stewart Island. We enjoy a sunny and temperate climate, just out of reach of coastal winds.

Central Southland College is a school where people matter, where we aim to fully meet the academic, cultural and sporting goals of all our students. We pride ourselves on academic excellence and on our friendly, caring family environment.

Central Southland College is a co-educational State high school which provides excellent teaching and learning for 500 students from Year 9 to 13.

We expect students to set high goals for themselves and work hard to achieve them. We also encourage all international to become involved with the many cultural, sporting and social aspects of the school. This helps develop independent, innovative and confident people who are ready to take full advantage of the next steps in their learning.

PB4L – Positive Behaviour for Learning

PB4L School-Wide is a long-term, whole-school approach to help schools develop their own social culture that supports learning and positive behaviour. The framework is evidence based. It provides us with a process for considering both learning and behaviour across the whole school, and student by student.

Central Southland College have been part of the PB4L Framework since the beginning of 2015. This journey has given us the opportunity to review and refine our school values and deliberately embed these into all that we do at the College. The students, parents, staff and BOT collectively decided that at Central Southland College we value Honesty, Effort, Responsibility and Empathy. These values and the PB4L Framework are a core part of our school’s strategic plan.

Our HERE-O system enhances our ability to create a positive environment where we acknowledge when students do the right thing. The HERE-O system focuses both staff and student attention on the desired behaviours that are rooted in our agreed values.
This means we “place children in the best position to experience success in their learning and in their social relationships.”
